New to the Team!

Updated: 6 days ago

Earth’s Classroom is ecstatic to be the host site for two full time AmeriCorps members through Stream Team United’s AmeriCorps VISTA Program!

Since late August Earth’s Classroom has been busy working with our new AmeriCorps members, Taelor Vanous and Erik Ferguson, both from the Washington, MO area. They are assisting Earth’s Classroom in research, program development, and educational advancements to improve EC’s ability to connect more humans, mainly youth, with in-depth outdoor education about our fresh-water ecosystems and the ecosystems directly tied to our freshwater resources.

We are pleased to introduce both of our AmeriCorps members to you!

First, Taelor Vanous:

My name is Taelor Vanous, and I’m currently serving my second term as an AmeriCorps member at Earth’s Classroom. Before this, I completed

my first term at Maramec Spring Park in St. James, MO. I’m a college student planning to study Marine Biology and Conservation, driven by a deep passion for protecting our planet and its ecosystems. Growing up in Seattle, Washington, I spent much of my childhood outdoors—exploring forests, searching for wild-

life, hiking, and learning about different cultures. Those experiences sparked my love for our planet's natural and cultural wonders and created a lifelong connection to both.

I spent five years in Phoenix, Arizona, where I graduated high school before moving to Missouri, where I’ve lived for another five years. In Missouri, I’m also excited to contribute as a member of the Conservation Leadership Corps through the Conservation Federation of Missouri,

helping to protect the state’s natural resources. In my free time, I love exploring nature, spending

time with family and friends, and taking my dog, Pretzel, on adventures. I’m thrilled to be part of

Earth’s Classroom this year, working alongside Bill, Jody, and my fellow AmeriCorps member, Erik.

This experience deepens my commitment to conservation and environmental education while

equipping me with the skills and knowledge to create meaningful change.

Second, Erik Ferguson:

Erik is an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer serving with Earth's Classroom, where he is committed to expanding environmental education across Missouri. His work includes broadening program reach, aligning lessons with state standards, supporting fundraising and grant writing efforts, and creating outdoor learning opportunities that inspire both students and educators.

Erik’s connection to Earth's Classroom began with an unforgettable 5th-grade field trip and grew deeper through his participation in the Field Science Career Experience program in 2009. As an Eagle Scout with a passion for outdoor activities like mountain biking, canoeing, hiking, camping, and hunting, Erik has spent countless hours learning from and living in nature. This role has deepened his appreciation for the natural world and fuels his passion for helping others understand and protect our ecosystems.
