New News!

Updated: 12/13/2011

NRCE Program up and running:  The NRCE (Natural Resource Career Experience) was kicked off in September with great adventure and enthusiasm.  This is the largest NRCE class EC has run, with 22 participants from eight area high schools.  All the students had to apply for the grant paid certification program and were voted on by the EC board of directors.

They are an enthusiastic bunch and all plan to possibly pursue higher education in a science field of biology, chemistry, wildlife biology, geology or some other career related  to natural resources.  Once a month, throughout the school year, EC instructors meet with the students for a three to four hour course.  September was a four hour wild caving trip in Fisher Cave at Meramec State Park for the Geology course.  October NRCE travelled to Busch Wildlife Conservation Area for three hours of Ornithology.  And in November the students learned details in Mammology , studying skulls and furs of Missouri mammals.

All 22 students attend free because of grants received from the federal 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant, Bancorp Foundation and New Belgium Brewing Company.  We will continue to keep you posted on their adventures as the school year progresses.

Tree Climbing Adventure:  A new adventure program was held at EC in November.  Tree Climbing was taught by Jon Richards with Vertical Voyage from St. Louis, MO.  The program consisted of education on tree health, tree biology and natural history as well as use of equipment used by professional tree climbers that allows the participants to move up, down and side to side at their free will.  With a self belaying system, a feeling of control and comfort come with this amazing high rise experience.  It provides a new perspective to witness the views and wind experienced by the tree.  Vertical Voyage is a Professional rock climbing company that recently (about two years ago) added the art of respectfully climbing trees.  It is quite an enjoyable experience and done with wonderful professionalism.  Look for future tree climbing programs held at EC or visit www.verticalvoyages.com.
